Who were the top earners in Hollywood in 2013?
Robert Downey Jr earned $75 million. The Avengers was the third highest-grossing movie of all time and no star benefited more from that than Robert Downey Jr. Tony Stark might not have been the leader of the group (that honor belongs to Captain America) but Downey was the only indispensable actor which meant he was able to demand the most money.
Channing Tatum earned $60 million.Tatum gets a lot of attention for his looks but this year the actor proved that he's also one of Hollywood's smartest businessmen. Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh self-financed the movieMagic Mike, based partially on Tatum's past as a male stripper. So when the $7 million film hit it big at the box office, they each took home millions.

I personally don't connect with films using social networking sites. I usually see a trailer on TV and if I like the look of it or I have seen the other films within the trilogy and enjoyed it then I will go and watch the film rather than keeping up to date and commenting my opinions on social networking sites as it doesn't interest me.

Extension questions

Does the Hobbit franchise illustrate any wider trends in terms of contemporary film production?

The Hobbit franchise does illustrate wider trends in terms of contemporary film production by the technologies it uses such as a 3D camera which is becoming popular. Many films are often created from a book so already have a storyline. It is a blockbuster movie so a big budget movie which uses British actors who are most likely to be well known by the targeted nationality. The genre of the film appeals to a mainstream audience. The reason there were 3 institutions  means that there are more funds for the production of the Hobbit and there was a large interest expressed by MGM due to the success of Lord of the Rings.

Do the current trends reflect the types of films you watch?
I don't think the current trends reflect the types of films I watch as I don't tend to watch 3D films.
